What is non-structural plywood?

Non-structural plywood is a panel not certified for load-bearing use under Australian Standards. It is designed for interior applications such as furniture, cabinetry and joinery, where surface finish and stability are more important than structural performance.

How strong is non-structural plywood?

Non-structural plywood provides good stiffness for interior use but is not structurally rated. For example, 18 mm non-structural plywood is commonly used for cabinet carcasses and shelving, but it must not be used where certified load-bearing performance is required.

Is non structural ply treated?

Non-structural plywood is not typically preservative treated. Most products are manufactured for interior use and may have moisture-resistant glue bonds, but they are not treated for termite or outdoor exposure unless specifically stated.

Non-structural plywood is designed for applications where appearance, stability and workability matter more than certified load-bearing performance. It is commonly used across interior fit-outs, furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, shelving, wall linings and decorative joinery where consistent quality and a clean finish are required.

Unlike structural plywood, non-structural panels are not graded or certified to structural standards. However, this does not mean they are inferior products. In many interior and furniture applications, non-structural plywood is the correct and appropriate choice, offering better surface quality, finer face veneers and a wider range of decorative and paint-grade options.

These plywood boards, which have a higher-grade face than structural ones, are a better choice if you plan to apply paint or other similar materials to the them.
