Four-panel comic of a plywood character Ply Bob and trees in a snowy landscape.

Ply Bob Origins - The Birch Beginning

In a faraway land blanketed by snow, deep within a quiet European forest, two graceful birch trees stood tall and proud. One shimmering winter night, the moonlight kissed the ground between their roots, and there - nestled in the snow - lay a tiny, freshly-cut wooden plank. His name was Ply Bob. The Birches gazed down at him with joy, their branches swaying gently to keep the snowflakes from his face.

As dawn broke, golden rays spilled across the snowy forest. The light warmed little Ply Bob’s smooth surface until he began to wiggle and laugh! With every step, his tiny woodgrain feet left neat patterns in the snow, like rings of a tree frozen in time. The Birches smiled proudly, whispering through their leaves.

Seasons passed, and Ply Bob grew strong and curious. He spent his days in a small woodshop at the forest’s edge, where kind carpenters taught him the old ways — how to sand, how to glue, and how to listen to the hum of saws like music. His hands became steady, his heart brave.

The Storm in Splinter Creek

Once upon a time, in a peaceful valley called Splinter Creek, the wooden folk lived in perfect harmony.

Among the townsfolk was Ply Bob, the cheerful carpenter plank, and his best friend Maple, who painted every sunrise with bright colours. Together, they kept the little town neat - sanding fences, fixing roofs, and polishing the playground slides for the woodchip kids.

But one afternoon, the sky darkened. Rain poured in sheets, rattling every shingle and board. The great oak bridge trembled, and the wind tugged at rooftops as though trying to tear the town apart. The little woodchip houses squeaked and creaked in fright.

Maple dashed to cover the painted benches with tarps, while Ply Bob hammered down loose planks, his wooden arms glowing from the effort. Lightning flashed - bright as a saw blade - and thunder echoed through the valley like a hammer on a giant anvil.
When the storm reached its peak, a mighty gust ripped the top off the town’s old sawmill. Without thinking, Ply Bob braced himself and used his sturdy frame as a support beam, holding the roof in place until the winds calmed. The rain slowed, the clouds drifted away, and a single golden sunbeam broke through the sky - warm and gentle once more.

The wooden folk came out of hiding, their barky faces full of relief. That evening, under a pink sky, the townsfolk rebuilt what the storm had shaken. They sang, sanded, and painted together, stronger than before. Ply Bob and Maple carved a small wooden sign by the creek:

“Storms may shake our branches, but never our roots.”

And from that day on, the people of Splinter Creek never feared a storm again - for they knew that with heart, teamwork, and a little timber courage, even the wildest winds could be turned into music.

10 Plyful Facts

1. Plywood has layers!

It’s made by gluing thin sheets of wood (called veneers) together - kind of like a wood sandwich!

2. It’s super strong!

Because the layers go in different directions, plywood doesn’t crack or bend easily - it’s like teamwork in wood form!

3. It can travel the world!

Plywood is used to build houses, boats, cars, and even airplanes, so it might have seen more countries than you!

4. It started over 100 years ago!

People have been using plywood since the 1800s - even the ancient Egyptians used a similar idea thousands of years ago!

5. It’s like wood’s superhero cousin!

While plain wood might split, plywood stays tough under pressure.

6. Builders love it!

From floors and walls to furniture and even skateboards - plywood is everywhere. Look around, you might be sitting on it right now!

7. Some plywood doesn’t mind water!

Special types like marine plywood can handle wet conditions - perfect for boats or beach huts.

8. It’s a bit of a recycling hero!

Many plywood sheets use fast-growing trees like poplar or pine - helping save slower-growing forests.

9. It’s smooth and stylish!

Plywood can be painted, stained, or covered with fancy wood veneers like Tassy oak or maple, making it both strong and good-looking!

10. It brings people together!

From school projects to big buildings, plywood helps everyone create amazing things - one layer at a time.
